Chum Reap Sour! (= Hello!) My full name is Janny Vang, but you can simply call me Rum. I was born on the 11th November 1977 right in the middle of the Khmer Rouge era,in Kien Kes village, Tmor Kol district, Battambang province, close to Cambodia’s western border with Thailand.
On the road to becoming a professional tour guide, I experienced a wide range of jobs in my country’s agriculture and services. I was also a migrant construction worker in Thailand for a while. That why I feel I understand so much about Cambodian peoples’ lives, which many international visitors want to ask me about. The big change in my own life began when I got married young, and soon had children to care for. Now we have four children: two of ours and the other two from my sister in law, who we adopted because she was unable to look after them.
Although I graduated from school in 1997, I had not been a very good student. Despite of my stepfather’s encouragement, I hadn’t wanted to study anything, because I didn”t then appreciate the usefulness and value of education. After I graduated I decided to move to Siem Reap, hoping to find new opportunities there. To begin with it was so hard. Through family connections, I got work as a waiter and motorbike driver in one of the many new guesthouses that were then springing up. I worked all hours for very little money. But through my work, I met so many friendly tourists, learned so much about the world outside of Cambodia and so developed my own interest in the history of my own country. And I discovered that all my time in school hadn’t been wasted, as I was able to use books as well as talking to tourists to improve my international English!
I have guided tourists on tours to Angkor Wat Park for more than 8 years. In 2008, I decided to do the course to become an official licensed tour guide. Today my brother cousin and I want to build all of the knowledge we share into an ethical tourism website, connecting our Cambodian family with the families of all our clients, in a positive spirit of international exchange. Due to tourists growing from year to years wasing up, So I decided to catch a own business with my brother cousin .His name is Sopheap phan (=Gentle man) and simply call him Fanthasy. He graduated Bachelor Degree in Tourism management and worked as Tour operator at one of popular travel agent company for 3 years. Now, we decided to run own business together in order to enhance our business and increase our incomes for improving our family’s living standard. To this end, I would like to express my profound gratitude to all of you who have visited my country and shared your valuable time with us, and who are now taking the time to read this short account of my background and on going actives. Through this website, we strongly hope many of you will join us in further adventures of travel and self-discovery!
